• Getting started can be a different experience for every model. Some will get scouted (when an agent or scout comes up to you and asks for you to come in and meet with them), others will have to go to agencies for open calls (like an interview) in hopes of getting signed! It can be an exciting process either way and hopefully these tips will help you find your perfect agency.
  • If you haven’t been scouted and want to get into the industry, start by doing your research! Read up on the current agencies and see which ones looks like they would be a good match for you.
  • Know the industry. There’s a modeling agency for everything from ones that specialize in runway to commercial (or both) to body part modeling, hair modeling, you name it! Check out models.com, style.com and vogue.com for inspiration!
  • They will be looking for the best, most professional person they can find, no matter what kind of modeling you get in to. Make sure you’re your best self before you go in for an open call. Be in top shape, know some of your better angles (practice in the mirror beforehand!), be bikini ready, be yourself and have fun with the process.
  • Regarding the runway walk, they will most likely help you with this when you are new but it is extremely beneficial for you to practice beforehand. Buy a pair of heels at least 4.5/5 inches, watch youtube videos and practice, NONSTOP! Howcast media uploads a lot of great videos on youtube, including how to perfect your runway walk. (Check out one of their videos below!)
  • SIMPLE IS BETTER! They will mold you however they see you being your best self (if that requires a hair cut or color change, etc). Go in with a simple outfit (black is good), no or little product in the hair, very very little makeup and clean/bare nails. Your job is to be able to transform for each job, they need to see the clean slate and how you look naturally. Unless of course your crazy quirky style is part of your persona. Then rock that!!
  • Open call or the ‘interview’ that I keep referring to is when you bring yourself to the agency to see if you can sign up with them. Research before (either on their website or by phone) to see when the agencies have their open calls. You can also send your pictures to them by email. My mom sent Elmer Olsen models in Toronto pictures of me since I was 12-18. I visited him each summer wanting to sign but he wanted to wait until I was my best self. Many agencies sign you when you’re too young and you can burn out easily. Although frustrating at the time, I’m so glad he made me wait, I was not only able to finish high school but also become more confident in myself.
  • You can have (as I did) your mom or friends take some pictures of you for practice as well as something to bring with you to the agency. However, a lot of the time they like dealing with BRAND NEW girls who have no experience. A lot of clients love breaking out a new star, so the newer, fresher the face the better! Don’t feel bad about walking into the agency with no experience.
  • Always carry with you a bikini, heels, makeup wipes, a hairbrush, small amount of makeup, moisturizer, hygiene necessities, and tattoo cover ups if required. You will come across as 100% prepared if you have these and agencies will really appreciate your professionalism.
  • Have fun, be yourself, be confident and ready for the journey, expect tons of rejection and try not to take anything personally. It can be a difficult industry but one that makes all the hard work worth it!
