• Try and pack snacks with you when traveling, you never know if your flight will get delayed! As my boyfriend can confirm, nothing is worse than a hungry model…!
  • Bring your own food with you to set! It helps you stay on point with your diet especially if all there is are unhealthy options. I always bring stuff in tupperware and see if they have a fridge for me to store my things. And hey, if they have a healthy lunch, have that (or your own!) and save the leftovers for dinner;)
  • Be active on social media! These days, clients are looking for people to help promote their brand, what better way than to have models post their stuff? Having an online persona helps show your best true self and is often what clients go through when booking models. Be yourself, be professional and have fun with it!
  • Flexibility is key!! Often times, we don’t receive our schedules until the night before which leaves little room for making plans. It’s nice to have dates with friends but nothing can ever really be locked in. Hopefully you have a supportive circle that understands you may be canceling a lot of stuff last minute. You may even get a last minute flight for that night!! Remember, this is what you signed up for an any work is better than no work! There is always another girl who will step right up to the plate if you chose not to do the last minute casting or job…
  • Study, study, study! Be aware of current and future trends, follow the shows and fashion industry icons you look up to. models.com, style.com, vogue.com, i-d.vice.com are all great resources to get in the know!
  • Have hobbies, future plans and interests that can take over when modeling is ‘slow’ or starting to end. The seasonality of modeling is always up and down; one week will be crazy busy and the next completely quiet. It’s good to be aware of your interests and be able to keep yourself busy during these quiet times. Unlike other careers, modeling can be quite short-lived. It’s good to have a future plan that you can resort to (unless you’re able to make a life long career of this of course;)
  • Stay close with your pre-modeling friends. A lot of people come and go in this industry, one minute you’ll make a friend and the next day they’ll be on a plane half-way across the world. Not to mention it can be extremely difficult to meet genuine people in this industry. Your friends knew you before and will hopefully be there as you make this new transition. It’s good to rely on them when things get tough, not to mention they can help bring you back to reality if your ego gets too big;)
  • Stay true to yourself and be confident! Your look, your personality, your different qualities are what will get you booked! Not if you try to be someone else. Try not to take anything too personally (this is still hard for me) but if you don’t get booked, just let it roll and try for the next one. It could be something as small as they needed a blonde and not a brunette, you’ll never know!
